Description: Michael Braukus Headquarters, Washington, D.C. June 8, 1994 (Phone: 202/358-1979) RELEASE: 94-95 STUDENTS SELECTED FOR NASA SCIENCE TRAINING PROGRAM NASA has selected 38 college students for an intensive six-week Space Life Sciences Training Program (SLSTP) at its Kennedy Space Center in Fla. The summer residence training program is for undergraduate college students majoring in life sciences, bioengineering, and related science and engineering fields. SLSTP is designed to attract college students to a career in space life sciences research, and encourages the participation of women and historically underrepresented minorities. Selected students work with NASA researchers in developing flight and ground-based space life sciences experiments. In addition to offering hands-on research experience, the curriculum utilizes lectures by astronauts, as well as NASA and university scientists, facility tours and special projects to provide a complete overview of the field of space life sciences. The special project areas this year will involve plant space biology, flight experiment development, ecological monitoring and controlled ecological life support systems. The program will be held from mid-June through the end of July. After the successful completion of the program, five semester hours of college credit will be offered to each student through Florida A&M University. The 38 students were selected competitively from nearly 400 applicants. Students in the program must be undergraduates majoring in science or engineering and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0. More than 325 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1985. -more- -2- SLSTP is sponsored by NASA's Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences and Applications and by the Minority University Research and Education Division.
